Un-01 Goldramon

This page discusses the Goldramon Promo Card that was printed for The Digimon Weekend at Universal Studios Hollywood. When I first started collecting Digi-Battle cards I was pretty sure that I would never actually get my hands on this one, it just seemed too hard to find. But after several years of searching I was able to add it to my collection.

What is the Card?

This is an incredibly rare holo promo card of the Mega Level Digimon Goldramon. There is a French version of this card that was released with Booster Set 3 but it's unclear whether this promo is just a translation of that card or if the French set came later.

How was it Distributed?

The card was only available at an exclusive event at Universal Studios Hollywood, hence the serial code UN-01. I haven't been able to find a first-hand account of the event but from what I've been able to find online it was really just a promotion for the Digimon Adventure 2 anime launch and an opportunity to try and get kids interested in the Digi-Battle card game.

The event took place on Saturday the 2nd of September 2000 and Sunday the 3rd of September 2000.

Attendees received the card packaged in a clear plastic sleeve (the same as how the Movie Promo cards were packaged). Inside contained the promo card itself and a paper insert, the front and back of which is pictured below. I do not own the paper insert so these images were kindly sent to me by a collector on eBay:

The insert reads:

"The Digimon card you have just collected is very special. In addition to being collectable and available ONLY at Universal Studios Hollywood, each Goldramon card is an important part of the Digi-Battle Card Game."
Bold of them to claim that it's an important part of the game when you literally cannot use the card in an English deck... The rest of the text is just advertisements, but the domain name is worth noting ;)

Why is it so Rare?

Cards distributed in this way are bound to become rare and collectable. Not only was it only available at an exclusive event, but it was given out to CHILDREN who were either on vacation or on a day trip. The chances of a child taking care of a trading card from an obscure card game they spontaneously received is small enough at that. At the time of writing this The Digimon Weekend happened more than 20 years ago, the number of these cards that still exist (forget about being in good condition) are very small. Aside from eBay sellers, I'm aware of less than 5 people who own this card today.

Furthermore, I suspect that The Digimon Weekend wasn't nearly as popular as they'd hoped it would be, meaning that even less of these cards were distributed in the first place. From the people that I've spoken to that own/owned this card, I haven't been able to find a single person who actually attended the event.

One account from someone living in Hollywood at the time said they got theirs from a staff member at school who had a stack of them that they would give out to kids. If that person had kept hold of them they would be sitting on a goldmine today.

Another person told me that they received theirs at a different event held by Universal Studios, not The Digimon Weekend and not held at the main resort. They must've had a lot of cards left that they were just trying to get rid of.

Everyone else I've spoken to has got their copy of the card by buying it online.

First-Hand Account

I was contacted by a man called Chris who actually attended the Digimon Weekend at Universal Studios! He was happy to shed some light on what happened at the event and how UN-01 was distributed.

Chris lived locally to the park and was a regular attendee at the different events they held. He was also a massive Digimon fan and owned the original cards so it was only natural that he would attend the Digimon Weekend with his family.

The event took place in a building just passed soundstage 13 which no longer exists at Universal Studios, it was in the building that formerly housed the AMC's The Walking Dead Attraction. That building had been repurposed multiple times, having previously been a part of the Mummy Returns walkthrough and Universal Classic Monsters walkthrough. There was a banner across the street outside advertising the Digimon Weekend as you approached the venue. When you walked into the building there was a big screen broadcasting Digimon Season 2, which would've been just out at the time, with beanbag chairs to sit and watch. Behind the seating area was a lit section of tables each attended my staff with Digi-Battle cards to teach kids how to play the game. This is where he sat and learned the game. Afterwards Chris received a Digimon goodie bag, he can't remember what exactly what was inside besides fliers and other advertisements but this bag contained the sealed UN-01 promo card pack.

He and his brother each received one of these goodie bags with a Goldramon card. The card his brother got was the UN-01 we're familiar with, but incredibly the card he received was a misprint. It is the most fantastic misprint of any Digi-Battle card I have ever seen: it is miscut by a huge amount and the holo shift is the biggest I've ever seen. I can't believe this passed quality control! It means that he owns one of the most special Digi-Battle cards to exist in my opinion.

I'm so happy to have a first-hand account of the Digimon Weekend, a massive thank you to Chris for sharing this info with the community! He's a super nice guy and I'm grateful that he reached out to me, he's still a part of the fandom so be sure to give him a follow: twitter.com/MisterCrits

During our conversation he also informed me about a Fox Kids "Animagination" event he attended prior to this. I asked if there were any cards distributed here but he didn't know as they arrived towards the end of the event. I suspect this could be the source of the Fox Kids FX cards that have been a mystery for so long but I'll have to investigate further.

There was also an article with photographs published in the Winter 2000 issue of Fox Kids magazine. Credit to digimoncardcurator for this awesome find!

Selling Price

To my amazement, there's actually 2 actively on eBay at the time of writing this! The asking price for one is $399.95 and the other is $400, which is about right in my opinion although they are leaning towards the high-end. I've seen 3 sell since 2020 for between $200 and $400, before that one sold for about $90 and I remember being so annoyed that I missed out on it.

At the end of the day these are collectibles that only appeal to a very niche market. They're only worth what someone's willing to pay, which at this point can be a few hundred quid.

The YouTube channel Bopi's TCG made an awesome video on this card. He managed to get his hands on one that had a printing issue where the holo film had shifted, making it an extra special version of this crazy rare card. You should definitely check out the video.
